One day, Lëk the Hare and Mbott the Toad decided to race along the beach
of Yoff, from the Diamalaye mausoleum to the bay of Tonghor. Knowing that
the hare was much faster, Mbott the Toad asked his parents for advice.
“We can certainly help you,” said his brother and sister toads.
“I’ll be at the starting line at the Diamalaye mausoleum,” said one brother.
“I’ll go to Ngaparou Beach,” added one sister.
“And as for me, I’ll be a bit farther, near Dagoudane,” said another. “And you, Mbott, you wait at the finish line at the Tonghor fish market.”
When the race began, Lëk the Hare shot ahead of his
opponent with great speed. But when he got to Ngaparou Beach, he saw a toad
up ahead of him. So he ran faster and overtook him. At Dagoudane, he saw another
toad in front. Once again, he sped up. Finally, at the Tonghor fish market,
Lëk was astonished to see Mbott the Toad, already there and raising his
arms in victory.
