Senegalese students

Senegalese students receive scholarships to enroll in Living Routes programs, as work-study candidates, contributing to the integration of American students into Senegalese society and to translating from local languages to French during field work in ecovillages so that American students can participate in coursework and social events with villagers. Candidates should apply directly to the GENSEN Living & Learning Center, as work-study candidates. GENSEN takes responsibility for student admissions, forwarding student information to Living Routes, and delivering University of Massachusetts, Amherst, transcripts to Senegalese students.

Admission requirements:

-- successful completion of the Deug Duel (equivalent to American Junior year status)

---8 years of English classes in middle and secondary school or other proof of English proficiency

---interest in participating in the program as cross-cultural facilitators and translators

---complete availability over the three month course period

---submission of a letter of request and a recent CV

We cordially invite you to enroll in our programs. Please apply or inquire by email to students@gensenegal.org

International students

American and other non-Senegalese students interested in enrolling for credit in the Living Routes program on a work-study basis should apply directly to the GENSEN Living & Learning Center. We takes responsibility for your admission in collaboration with Living Routes, and we normally admit only one candidate per program. Admission depends on the "work" needed from the work-study student. We sometimes are able to provide free admission to bilingual undergraduates for taking lecture notes in French, translating documents between English and French and helping with office work.

Graduate interns, working as international student coordinators, also are intitled to attend the program for credit, provided it doesn't prevent them from carrying out their other tasks.

Work study students applying as student coordinators will ideally have some experience in program coordination and in living in a Francophone African country, as well as major academic interests related to sustainable development. Please email students@gensenegal.org. for more information. In your email, please attach a recent CV and include a personal statement of interest Although the Sustainable Development. Semester is an undergraduate program (receiving continuing education credits), we will attest to your staff experience as a program assistance.

What it offers to non US-students

Following successful completion of the Sustainable Development Semester Program all registered students receive 16 continuing education credits from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The January Term three week program provides 4 credits

Most American universities permit students already enrolled in their own programs to transfer these credits to their existing transcripts.

Senegalese and other students who are not currently enrolled in an American University find these transcripts useful as proof of their capacity to successfully carry out US level academic work.

Their transcript from the University of Massachusetts may assist them in obtaining admission to a US or other international university. Once admitted , this continuing education credit may then be accepted to fulfill the requirements of their university degree.

Other work-study students may also use their experience to satisfy internship requirements or (for high energy individuals) to collect thesis data

In order to provide proof of academic rigor, most of our courses administer quizzes and end-of-term examinations (with the exception of service learning). These tests and other academic assignments are graded according to the same standards for everyone.
