Regional Challenges: This village community is facing the following difficulties in relation to their development:
- Deforestation and the rapid decline of vegetation in the area
- A lack of rainfall and lower crop yields as a result
- Access to freshwater (the existing freshwater sources have mixed with saltwater from the ocean)
- A lack of biodiversity
- The decline in fishing yields for local fishermen
- The growth of poverty
- The presence of diseases like malaria
- Clash of existing social values with the modern world
Recent Community Initiatives: The local community has organized itself as an ecovillage to confront these issues and to put in to practice the values of a well functioning ecovillage.
Projects include:
Animal rearing, gardening and agriculture in general, the construction of artificial reservoirs and ponds, implementation of micro credit projects, fishing, meetings that reinforce capacity-building in several sectors of the village
